Parsons, Kansas is a small town in Midwestern United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Parsons County. The history of Parsons dates back to 1854 when it was founded as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The original name for the town was "Saddleback." In 1865, Parsons became the capital of Kansas and was renamed "Parsons" after James W. Parsons, an early settler and business man who played a significant role in developing the town. In 1870, railroad construction reached Parsons and within two years, over 1,000 people had arrived to build homes and businesses around what would become known as Main Street. By 1875, most of downtown had been developed with handsome brick buildings housing stores, churches and government buildings. In 1892, local school superintendent John Henshaw donated land on which Richards Academy would be built; this institution would serve as one of the mainstays of local education until World War II. In 1907–08 renovations were made to Main Street's sidewalks which included installation of new streetlights and fountain headwaters that still exist today. Heathrow-Morse School District No 2 opened its doors in 1913; during its first yeararden served more than 350 students from 8 different towns in Potter County including Parsons! In 1935–36 additions were made to both Administration Building (now part of Main Street Museum) and Parson's Marker (an outdoor plaque marking where James Wason plowed his field), both now located inside the walls of Administration Building - a feat not done by any other community in Kansas at that time! Parsons was a small town in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1887 by John Parsons and his family. The town population was 1,500 when it began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Kansas Central Railroad in 1895. By 1907, Parsons had become an important commercial and agricultural center with a cotton gin, feed mill, lumberyard, and several thousand residents. In 1915 the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. In 1920 the city annexed part of neighboring Newton. The community declined following World War II and its economic collapse; its last remaining resident died in 1984.

Parsons history began with the Wichita and Topeka Railroad in 1881. The railroad was built to bring goods from Kansas City, Missouri, to Wichita. The first train arrived in Parsons on September 15, 1881.
