The community has been home to prominent farmers such as Orville Deering and John Doolittle who helped develop Kansas agriculture into one of the most successful in America; journalism pioneer Edward Ruppert who founded KBIR-TV; businesswoman Barbara Bush who started her own clothing company here; and actor Edward James Olmos who was born here
