In 1907, Parsons annexed the neighboring town of Chatman and formed a new city government with identical powers to that of Wichita. Today, Parsons remains an important community within Wichita's limits and has developed into a major shopping center with several high-rise buildings adjacent to downtown.
Parsons, Kansas was founded in 1847 by Daniel Parsons and is the oldest incorporated town in the U.S. It is located on the southern border of Lawrence County, Kansas and is bordered by Olathe to the north, Topeka to the east, and Shawnee to the south. The town was named for Colonel John Parsons who donated land for its establishment. The first post office opened in 1848. In 1870, Parsons became a county seat of Lawrence County and also became an important center for transportation due to its location on the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1907, Parsons merged with Topeka to form a new city-county combined government which remain as separate entities today
