They camped for a night at Locust Grove Creek near present-day Overland Park before continuing their journey the next day. On November 3, 1871, the first store opened in Overland Park when Augustus Fenton opened a general store at Tenth and Market Streets. A post office was established at that location on December 1, 1871. In 1897, Overland Park had its own water system with two wells and a pump station built by John Witherspoon Peden. The city's growth came about due to its location within easy reach of St Joseph County seat Topeka while also being close to Wichita and Lawrence (the state capitals). By 1932, Overland Park had reached its peak population with over 10,000 residents; however by 1970 it had shrunk to 576 individuals as suburban development began encroaching upon downtown streetscape values which led to declining population totals until 2000 when it rebounded slightly with 785 residents according to the 2010 census figures . Recently new construction outside of downtown has continued this trend albeit slowly causing some loss of character off Main Street which once ran through central OverLAND PARK

The city was founded in 1867 by farmers from Illinois and Missouri who moved to what is now Adams County. Overland Park became a town in 1870, and it was made a city in 1907. It is the second-largest municipality in Adams County after Wichita. The first overland wagon route through present-day Overland Park was established by Major George Stephenson and his men on July 24, 1848 when they traveled from Independence (now Topeka) to Lawrence (now Lawrence). At that time there were no permanent settlements withinpresent-day Overland Park boundaries; only small groups of nomadic Native Americans lived hereabouts at various times during the Late 1800s and early 1900s. Some early settlers in this location included John Sutter, Isaac Backus and James Watt; these men were among the earliest white settlers to make significant contributions to the growth of Waco Heights today. These pioneers purchased land around Waco Heights from local chiefs for their ranching operation which soon grew into one of largest cattle drives on record reaching as far away as Canada during those years! In 1867, farmer Moses Goodrich erected a store near what is now Main Street and Market Square in what would later become Overland Park's downtown area – believed to be the world's first commercial building constructed on an open site! As more people began moving into this growing community, good stores opened up throughout the region: First National Bank (1868), Globe Drug Store (1870), Masonic Temple (1871), Ford’s Livery stable(1872), Armour Mercantile store(1875), Post Office Building No 1(1907). Downtown Overland Park rapidly assumed its present form with its two large blocks of buildings along Market Square – home to many important businesses including schools, churches and hospitals until annexation by Wichita led to their closure during prohibition era! In 1907, City Council decided that OverLAND PARK should be made an official city name! With this new designation came opportunities for economic development including construction of numerous public works projects such as Kanza Institute - one of America's leading experimental medical institutions - built on top of Comanche Hills golf course just east of downtown; completion of riverfront development including brand new shopping malls across both banks of Arkansas River; continued growth paralleling Wichita’s dramatic suburban expansion southward culminating with recent rezoning allowing Forster Hospital/Centers for Disease Control & Prevention headquarters complex located just east side Main Street adjacent to Kmart Supercenter bearing similarity footprint designations thereto existing within Wichita limits since 1960! Today much remains unchanged or has been renovated or added onto within recently annexed areas making it one continuous community fabric especially as seen within current day 'Downtown' areas surroundingsKansas State University & Health Science Center also situated nearby sharing plaza setting across 2 levels & 5 acres currently housing KSU School Of Veterinary Medicine @ 6th floor atop high rise modernist style structure completed fall 2016 KCMO Arts District presence discernible via newly installed streetlights outside high rises...
