The Overland Park Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1879. Today, the club offers a wide range of services for members, including shooting, fishing, and camping. The club is also responsible for maintaining the historic rifle range located on North Main Street in Overland Park. In 1916, the Overland Park Rifle and Pistol Club became an affiliate of the National Rifle Association (NRA). NRA membership helped support many activities at the rifle range, such as instruction and target practice. In 1934, NRA membership decreased to its original level of 10 members because many Kansas towns had joined the NRA. However, over time NRA members have returned to join the club. Today there are over 100 NRA certified members in Overland Park!

Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Johnson County. The population was 120,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's history can be traced back to 1853, when it was named for George Overland, a settler in what is now Midwestern Kansas Territory. The first post office in Overland Park was established on November 11, 1853, by Captain John A. Herron with the name of "Ontario". In 1855, Overland Park became the capital of Johnson County; but due to its small population and lack of infrastructure at that time, it did not become an important political center until after 1860 when railroads arrived in Johnson County and began expanding into western Kansas Territory. In 1865, Johnson County was merged into Shawnee County; but Overland Park continued to exist as its own independent municipality until 1870 when it joined Shawnee County again under new government structure which placed more emphasis on economic development than on political power. Kansas voted for secession from the United States in 1861; but over time OverLAND PARK began to build up support among local residents for remaining within the Union as a matter of regional self-defense against potential attack by Confederate interests eastward through Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). On July 14th 1861 Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order Pending their Answer relative To The Question Of Annexation Of Douglas And Saline Counties By The State Of Missouri--Allotted To That Place By Authority From President Abraham Lincoln On January 1st 1860--In Response To Which They Did Not Respond--This Order Issued For The Purpose Of Defeating Any Invasion Or Attack Against This Commonwealth Which Might Be Made BY ANY OF THE PARTIES TOOK INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE THEIR RESPONSE WAS MADE AND DID NOT KNOW THAT THEY WERE BEING ANnexED BY MISSOURI . "The citizens throughout this territory had been organizing themselves into societies for defense purposes since before [the war] started," said historian Drs Don Easley and Don Dickson during their presentation about "The Unknown History of Overland Park" at Western Illinois University on November 6th 2017., "There were militias all over country...this wasn't some wild uprising where people just start coming out and fighting." Easley and Dickson also discovered that there were records dating back to 1853 which show that Queen Victoria herself had ordered military forces stationed in present day Wichita Falls (then called Topeka) hearing complaints about possible Creek Indian attacks along US 67 south of Wichita Falls; these troops were eventually withdrawn before any hostilities broke out between American settlers and tribals outside Topeka proper. In 1863 General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Lawrenceburg (now Parsons) east of Topeka while supplies were being moved westward across US 67 towards Fort Riley; However despite initial successes Confederate forces soon withdrew following news received back home about Forrest's movements. Aftermath saw increased patrols along US 67 by both military/civilian authorities as well as travelers who had grown used to seeing large armies moving through their area daily or weekly without causing any serious damage or disturbance.; One such traveler was James Kossuth who passed through Lawrenceburg multiple times during 1863-1864 reporting activity near his farmstead including sightings of men riding horses around town unloading supplies then riding away quickly without leaving behind any clues as to where they went.. Aftermath also included several skirmishes between American settlers and Native Americans near present day Hays City although no real hostilities occurred either side.; Note: This account does not mention anything about slavery or black people living here prior to 1861
