In 1865 over 400 citizens organized themselves into a provisional government known as the Union League to resist Reconstruction policies instituted following the American Civil War. Their resistance helped lead to increased violence against African Americans throughout Johnson County until Congress passed legislation ending Reconstruction in 1865; this action set off a wave of white flight across southern Kansas which led to the loss of much agricultural land and job opportunities for African Americans." In 1870 merchant Nicholas Doane opened up what would soon become one of America's largest retail stores at 1118 Wornall Ave., just north of downtown Overland Park along I-670W (now Elm Street). The store became one of local landmarks still seen today if you drive down Elm Street between I-670W and Wornall Ave.. Many people say that If it weren't for Doane's Store things might have been very different inside downtown Overland Park during those early years."
