Shortly after President Ulysses S Grant took office following Abraham Lincoln's death on April 12th 1870 he ordered General William Tecumseh Shermanlimited operations against Confederate forces throughout Oklahoma Territory pending results from peace negotiations being conducted under his command; this order lasted until May 4th 1870 when Sherman announced his intentions to cross INTO KANSAS TOWARD NOGALES [5].
