Overland Park was founded in 1857 by George Crouch and Daniel McIntosh as the new town site for what would become Wichita. The first post office opened in 1861. In 1865, Overland Park became an independent city when it seceded from Wichita. Overland Park's first mayor was JF Mapes. The original downtown business district was destroyed by fire in 1931 and replaced with a newer district that still includes much of the original business district today. In 1965, Overland Park annexed part of Lawrence County to form its own city government. That annexation led to growth in economic activity within Overland Park itself as businesses moved into areas annexed by Lawrence County without having to worry about taxes or infrastructure requirements that were met with neighboring cities such as Wichita or Topeka which were both fully incorporated municipalities at the time those annexations occurred. This type of growth has continued until today, with most large businesses now located within the boundaries of Overland Park proper rather than overlapping into other jurisdictions such as Lawrence and Shawnee counties which are respectively home to Topeka and Wichita
