This donation allowed for development of what would become downtown Overland Park which began shortly thereafter with various stores opening up along Washington Street including Butte’s Clothing Store (now Macy’s), J & G Bazaar Grocery Co., Ford’s Department Store Building #2 (later Sears), Pillsbury Bake Shop (now Pizza Hut), Armoury Tea Rooms (now Best Buy), Elks Lodge No. 726/No 1 across from current United Center where live concerts are held each summertime under open sky pavilion – see photo below). Today much of downtown OverLAND PARK remains unchanged since it was developed more than 80 years ago! A few notable exceptions include Second National Bank building which burned down in 1927; Elmira Savings Bank building built 1928-30 replacing an earlier store which also burned; Kress Drugstore built 1935-37 replaced an earlier drug store on West Washington Street; Home Depot built 1978-81 replaced an earlier Sears department store; Wacoal Hardware Corporation opened 1975 next door to Kress Drugstore after being displaced by Sam's Club when that store moved from its original location across Independence Boulevard south into nearby Olathe; Stouffer's Meat Market opened 1962 across from Kress DrugStore replacing previous meat market located just north of Central High School on Cassiar Road - see photo below).
