Another early business owner was J P Blythe who operated a grocery store on North Ninth Street between Pratt Avenue and I-435 for many years beginning around 1885.. By 1907 there were twenty businesses operating within five blocks of downtown Overland Park! It is the second most populous municipality in Sedgwick County after Overland Park. The City of Overland Park was founded on September 20, 1867, by employees of the Kansas Pacific Railroad as a station on their line between Topeka and Wichita. In 1870 it became the first incorporated town in Sedgwick County. On May 14, 1888 it became an independent city. On November 6 of that year an act to incorporate Overland Park was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor James Buchanan; this made Overland Park one of the initial cities in American history to be completely chartered as a municipal corporation separate from its county parentage. In 1903 Overland Park began construction of what is now known as Midtown Mall which anchored what was then called "The Strip." That same year also saw the opening of The Armoury which served as the first indoor shopping mall in America. In 1951 ground was broken for what would become "The Star-Kite" which would become one of downtown's major attractions; over time it has evolved into one of KCMO's most popular tourist destinations with over 2 million visitors each year! One particular resident who played a significant role during Downtown's inception is John Schieffer who served as Mayor from 1951 until his death in 1978 and chaired both the Planning Commission and Development Committee during those years! Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas that was founded in 1856 as a small farming town on the edge of what is now Midwestern Oklahoma Territory. The city was named after General James K. Polk, who had been elected President of the United States in 1860 and helped to create the area around Overland Park as part of the Kansas–Oklahoma Territorial Agreement. The original Overland Park post office was established in 1857, and residents voted to incorporate as a city on February 15, 1871. The first mayor of Overland Park was John W. Herndon (1871-75). He served under Mayor George Mifflin (1876-77) and Mayor John Fenton (1878-81). The last mayor of Overland Park was John Ladd (1901-02). Overland Park grew rapidly during its early years, becoming one of the largest cities in Kansas by 1870. By 1900, it had reached its present size and importance. In 1907, OverlandPark became an incorporated municipality with a population of 40,000 people. In 1969, it merged with Johnson County to form Johnson County over government objections from nearby Wichita City which wanted annexation into Wichita City proper; however this annexation did not take place until 1975 when Wichita City annexations were allowed by county ordinance only if they met certain conditions including having a population greater than 25%, being within 10 miles (16 km) of any other municipal incorporation or city withinJohnson County limits;Overlanders park annexed without meeting these requirements The current downtown core at what is now I-435/I-635W includes most of the old downtown areas dating back to before 1870 - notably Walton's Drug Store on Main Street where pharmacist DrsWalton and Mead started selling medications for use against cholera in 1849 - as well as some newer buildings erected since then such as First Baptist Church built 1912 & rebuilt 1978 & additions added 1984 The older parts have seen more recent development such as several new apartment complexes built near I-435/I-635W between 2010 & 2020 south side mall just east off I 435 west side
