The original town had no stores orresidential buildings; instead, people lived on hogs, horses, or stock provided by local ranchers. In 1896, Overland Park built its first schoolhouse and began to develop into a city with its own water supply, streetlights, newspapers, business districts and more businesses than any other small town in Kansas at that time. Kapp later became president of Missouri University which was then based in Independence City, Missouri. After his death in 1825, his son-in-law built Kapp Hall on present day Elm Street near Prospect Avenue in central OverLAND PARK. This building housed aspects of both Kapp Hall’s functions as a business center as well as a school during its initial years; it also served as home to local newspapers from 1836 until they were discontinued publication in 1860 due to financial troubles associated with Indian Wars fought between the United States and Great Britain over control of Northwest Territory (now Oklahoma). 2 A post office was established at Overland Park on November 1st, 1865; however service was sparse because transportation options only allowed travel one way at a time at that time! From 1865 until December 15th 1870 there was no mail service available due to Union Army troops occupying Lawrence County during the American Civil War! In February 1st 1870 Postmaster General Gideon Welles ordered all Ulysses S Grant’s Orders No 2 & 3 though AllUlyssesS Grant personally delivered them! 3 In October 1870 Congress passed Public Law 923 which authorized creation of four new public corporations: First National Bank (later renamed First Kansas National Bank), two cotton mills (the Cotton Mills Company and Phelps Dodge), three flour mills (the Flour Mill Company – later bought by Archer Daniels Midstream) – all located east of Topeka – and two irrigation ditches (the Iuka Ditch Company and Buffalo Ditch Company). These companies would be responsible for developing industries within their respective areas such as mines/mineral extraction; farming; lumbering/farming; engineering services etc.; these businesses would be self-insured against commercial risks caused by natural disasters or other factors outside their control like political instability or economic recession etc.. 4 As more people started arriving into this area they needed places to live so businesses could provide housing too! By 1875 over fifty homes had been erected along Elm Street alone!! A few years later Main Street was widened from four feet wide at one end TO six feet wide starting near Walnut Street where today's Grandview Shopping Center sits! Both streets remain width controlled today despite continuous growth throughout KC metropolitan area!!! 5 With so many people coming into town Rapid Transit Corporation Peruvian Railroad built an extensive system including tracks running north–south connecting downtown with various outlying neighborhoods without stops anywhere between those neighborhoods and downtown!!! This allowed businessmen and women alike easy access not just into downtown but also outlying areas like Topeka….. allowing shopping centers like Grandview Shopping Center dotting RTD lines all around KC!!!!!
