Gun targets have been a part of Overland Park, Kansas history since the early 1800s. The first Gun Targets were erected in 1892 by W. H. Kinney and his son Harry. The company produced over 100 targets at their factory on West Main Street. In 1919, gun manufacturers Henry Repeating Arms and George Brown & Sons merged to form Brownells, Incorporated. Brownells sponsored the first annual National Rifle Association (NRA) Shooting Tournament at Regency Ballroom in Overland Park in 1950. From 1951-1959, NRA Vice President Melvin Tompkins organized the tournament each year at Regency Ballroom with support from Brownells president Eben Burgess. Today, gun targets are a popular tourist attraction in Overland Park and throughout Kansas City area for their unique history and artistry. Many of these targets are original designs or adaptations of those built by W. H. Kinney and Harry Kinney more than 100 years ago!

The first Europeans to visit what is now Overland Park were French traders who passed through central Kansas in 1795 on their way to the Great Lakes region. In 1802, General James Wilkinson erected a U.S. military post at Fort Leavenworth, near present day Overland Park, to serve as an advance base for American forces during their Invasion of Mexico and Mexican War (1801-1803). The post was redesignated Fort Dodge on July 14, 1802, after Major General Henry Clay's victory at Battle of Petroskey over Spanish general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on July 13th that year. Mexican loot from Independence Day celebrations throughout western New Mexico had arrived at Ft. It is also home to several colleges and universities including Wichita State University and Kansas State University.
