The first post office in Overland Park was established on July 12, 1881, by George Hays. In 1907, Overland Park became a city and was named for Samuel Gardner Overland, an American soldier who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican–American War and who later served as governor of Kansas. In 1907, also in response to pressure from farmers east of the Arkansas River who wanted their land provided with access to markets for their goods produced near Topeka and Lawrence (the two cities then growing rapidly), Johnson County Commissioners voted to create an area around Topeka known as "The Outback". The new town would be located on what is now South Ridge Road south of Interstate 70 just east of US 65/I-70 junction; it would include about half of present-day Overland Park proper and parts of what are now north side neighbourhoods such as Balch Springs and Mission Hills; it would be self-sufficient with its own water supply and power plant; it would be surrounded by high fences preventing intruders from entering; it would have a name that reflected its agricultural surroundings: "Farmington". Construction began on Farmington on November 1, 1907; residents moved into their new homes during 1908. By 1912, all but one block of Farmington had been built when another developer purchased the land south of I-70 for $2 million. Another development called Centerpoint followed in 1914 before being abandoned in 1967 following heavy rainstorms which washed away most structures within . Today's portions of North Side were rezoned for industrial use after that date so no traces remain from over 100 years ago when these neighbourhoods were developing close to downtown Wichita
