In 1803, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it claimed all of Texas except for a strip along the US-Mexico border that lay within Mexican territory known as Oregon Country. On July 6 of that year – after a bloody battle at Palo Alto – Mexico awarded exclusive rights for settlement on these lands to James Kossuth and his band of Swiss immigrants called “the Hetmans” or “Hedgesmen” because they built their homes on hedges near Wichita Falls (now Ardmore). In 1825 President Andrew Jackson signed an executive order creating Shawnee County in present day Ottawa County; part of what would become Topeka County was also carved out of Shawnee Nation territory that had been divided between Canada and Mexico two years earlier following another bloody conflict overOregon Country boundaries at Fort Dearborn (now Independence). When Ulysses S Grant became president in 1865 he inherited much American Indian land northward from Mexico including much of what would become Overland Park (present day Johnson City). Eleven days after his inauguration he delivered a speech calling for approval of General Order No 1 which designated January 1st as Indian Removal Day: This order authorized commanders at Fort Leavenworth (then spelled Lawrence) with orders to drive any remaining Indians east across Kansas Line into Iowa Territory where they could be detained without trial or compensation until such time as their status could be clarified through peaceful means or until their removal could be effected under presidential proclamation…On January 1st many thousand Indians were ordered out onto prairie country west of Dodge City where they perished miserably from cold weather and disease en route…Overland Park was founded less than one mile away from where General Order No 1 caused such great pain more than twenty five years later when gold was discovered thereabouts! Kansas Territorial Legislature created Johnson County on February 14th 1861 based largely on recommendations made during hearings held prior thereto regarding western portions then lying within Armstrong County including Overland Park proper! On May 10th 1863 over one hundred men organized themselves into Company D1 under command Major John Ladds who erected two smalladobe log huts named Prospect Hill(today’s Prairie View A&M University)and Lone Star House(today’s Blue Cross Blue Shield building), soon afterwards angling toward Santa Fe Trail Station Ruins northeast corner First National Bank property current site Of Topeka! With wagon trains drawn by mules pulling wagons laden with goods waiting at various points along trail we departed December 15th 1863 reaching our destination late Saturday night just past Osage Hills(Osage Springs today) early Sunday morning arriving Wednesday evening!! It should be noted here that company name derived not only from location but also topography as well being equipped with artillery & cavalry support!! Today Johnson City/Topeka metropolitan area covers nearly half acre including original prospect sites!!!

Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the seat of Overland Park County. The population was 21,989 at the 2010 census, up from 15,878 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The city was founded on August 14, 1867 by James K. Polk and his brother Edward K., both citizens of Illinois Territory won through voting by Territorial residents only two weeks after Missouri’s admission to the Union as a state on May 12th (a day later than Overland Park). The early settlers were farmers who grew corn and wheat; some built log homes near where they lived while others constructed more elaborate structures such as brick churches and schools on Clear Creek which flowed through their town boundaries. In 1876, construction began on what would become Wichita State University – now Wichita Community College – with land donated by then-Mayor John Evans for that purpose. In 1886, due to Rapid City becoming an important railroad junction in western Kansas, Wichita became an incorporated municipality with its own mayor and council instead of being subject to mayoral approval from Overland Park County residents who voted overwhelmingly against annexation into Wichita in 1880 pursuant to a veto by county president George Adair (the same man who had vetoed annexation into overgrowed Arlington Heights). Despite this setback, growth resumed in Wichita due largely to investments made in education by successive mayors including Eugene Buell (1894-1901), Arthur Ashe (1901-1903), Charles Nichols (1903-1906), William Fenton Hull (1906- 1907), John Jumper( 1907- 1908) and Milton Hays( 1908- 1912). In 1916 over 30% of all goods sold in Wichita were exported; during World War I output increased eightyfold while during World War II it topped one million dollars per year! A new airport was completed east of downtown in 1959 which served as homeport for several airlines until supplanted by DePauw University Airport when that airport opened fullerton Avenue east between US 55/I‑10 and I‑70 about 10 miles south of downtown Overland Park following years of planning led by Mayor Harry Blackmun.(Blackmun played an important role in creating Shawnee Hills Cemetery adjacent to DePauw University.) Citizens initially raised funds for infrastructure improvements but soon realized that their tax dollars were also helping support large military bases located within or just outside their city limits which caused further resentment among locals towards these establishment interests until finally culminating with organized protests throughout the 1970s known locally as “Tax Motives No Action” or "TANOA". Ultimately this culminated with comprehensive redevelopment plans announced in 1978 entitled “Community Renewal” which aimed to integrate Target Corporation Mall into downtown Overland Park while leaving most businesses open so that they could continue operating despite rising energy prices resulting from OPEC oil embargo (); however this plan received little public attention because economic development outside Ofp park continued unabated even as retail business declined inside OFP park until recent times when various initiatives have led Toppssports stadium just north of downtown & major employers like Ballpark Village adjacent Interstate 170 have helped spur redevelopment there also
