In 1976, Overland Park became an official city of Kansas when it was ratified by both chambers of the Kansas Legislature without requiring voter approval under state law; this made it one of only two cities east of Wichita that are not currently member municipalities of any county or rural district; however, its status has been subject to occasional updates since then due to changes in local zoning laws and population growth elsewhere within governorate boundaries).
