In 1907, government officials decided that an all-black school would be better suited for African American students than white schools in the area so they started to build a black school called "Mohawk" on Southport Road NE., about one mile from central Overland Park proper. The new school opened on August 6, 1907 and became known as "Mohawk High". When it closed in 1969 due to budgetary problems with the then newly formed Johnson County Board of Education, it had been serving African Americans for over eighty years! The nearby White Sands Missile Range played an important role during World War II as a launch point for strategic bombers used by the United States military; some Of these bombers were based at Grady Junior College at nearby NorthKansas State Teachers College during this time period also becoming operational tests vital to America's war effort! After World War II ended there continued growth with suburban development adjacent to central Overland Park until annexation into Wichita following cityhood in 1963.- Central High School building still stands today
