Overland Park, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Parker County. The population was 83,491 at the 2010 census. The city is named after John Overstreet, an early settler in what is now Overland Park. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1836 in what is now Overland Park from Missouri and Illinois. The town was platted on Valentine's Day, 1849 by commissioners John Denton and Isaac Sargent under the name "Winterset." A post office called Winterset was established in 1850, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1861, over 60% of all American soldiers who fought during the American Civil War served within 10 miles (16 km) of Overland Park; this percentage increased to 97% by 1865 when local militia units became known as "the Midian Guard." In 1870s Indian Wars began around Wichita so traders from Topeka decided to move their trade routes northeast into central Kansas to evade Apache warriors raiding their settlements near Wichita Territory. This defensive move helped contribute to prosperity for Overland Park because livestock could be driven downriver for market without fear of attack or capture by hostile Indians. A streetcar system opened on December 1, 1892 between Central Avenue and Waverly Placeadee Street (now First Street), making Overland Park more accessible than most cities at that time. By 1907 there were streets running north-south through downtown with east-west avenues branching off them; these were followed by boulevards radialized throughout the city center in 1925-1927 when expressways were constructed parallel to Main Street/Waverly Placeadee Streets). Plans call for adding another 500 acres adjacent to Cheney ranch land providing additional housing targets including upwind neighborhoods around White River Airport Industrial Estate located just east side I-470 interchange next door slated for mixed use production facilities related thereto) . However soon afterwards problems surfaced with being able to find enough qualified citizens interested in participating given prevailing interest rates set among other things BY THE CITYMagistrateFORBIDDENTHENEWDISTRICT); nevertheless developer David Emmons applied successfully FOR THE DISTRICTS creation only TO BE REJECTED ON PUBLIC DISCUSSION APRIL 14TH 1992 AFTER HE CLAIMED THAT HIS BUSINESS ADDRESS WAS WRONGLY INCLUDED IN ONE OF THE TWO DISTRICTS DESIGNATED FOR HIM) .

The Kansas City Royals baseball team played its first game at Municipal Stadium on October 14, 1915; it would later move to Kauffman Stadium where it still plays today. The Overland Park area that includes the city of Overland Park and surrounding areas was first settled in 1854 by Scottish immigrants. The area became a sheep and cattle grazing ground, with a small population until the early 20th century. In 1907, Overland Park was founded as an agricultural center on the central Dog House River. In 1916, the Kansas Legislature created what is now called Johnson County to include the I-70 corridor between Topeka and Wichita. In 1920, Overland Park incorporated as a city. The city developed around its two large industrial parks: one near Central Avenue and One Hundred South Street and the other on Center Boulevard north of I-70. During World War II, Overland Park served as an important munitions production center due to its location at I-70 and Highway 715. After the war, Overland Park grew rapidly as a community of high school students, professionals, farmers, and businesses who formedthe "Village" during this period of rapid growth. Overland Park experienced another boom period in the late 1960s through 1970s when heavy industry left for greener pastures in suburban Kansas City; however, this 2nd wave of downtown redevelopment has since stalled or been reversed (e.g., zoning changes have kept businesses out of older neighborhoods). The current downtown area is being redeveloped into mixed use including office buildings/retail complexes along Main Street while also creating new streetscapes around Depot Square which contains several restored historic buildings dating back to 1853
