As Wichita’s population grew rapidly after World War I through annexation by other municipalities (including Topeka),Overland Park experienced rapid growth but little development except for a few scattered businesses along Main Street between State Highways 4W and 7W (now Vista Boulevard). In 1886, the first telephone line was established in Overland Park when Western Union leasedright-of-way from the post office for $1 per month In 1907, another important milestone happened when New York Central Railroad agreed to construct a line from Topeka to Olathe via Overland Park This line led to increased economic development within the city limits as well as throughout Mesquite County because it allowed transportation between these two larger areas without having to go through Wichita or Topeka
