In 1853, Palmer purchased land east of First Street for $5 per acre (this land later became Spring Hill). He named his new settlement “Overland Park” after his home state of overage (the name had been previously used for another suburban location). Over time, Overland Park grew into one of the largest towns in Kansas – with a population of 25,000 by 1860! The town achieved its current size when it annexed portions of Lawrence City in 1912 – making it one of Kansas’ most populous cities! In 1907, Overland Park became one of the first cities to adopt electric lighting – providing illumination throughout the city! Today, Overland Park remains an essential part ofKansas culture and economy – hosting dozens of cultural events each year! The city has also become well known for its award-winning schools – including two Nobel Prize winners: Dr. Milton Friedman and Bill Gates!
The Overland Park, Kansas community began as a small town on the banks of the Missouri River. The first settlers arrived in 1838, and by 1840, the community had grown to about 100 people. By 1846, over 400 people lived in Overland Park. The town was renamed Independence in 1851 after the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1907, Overland Park became a city.
