After defeating these Indians, they established Fort Scott on present-day South First Street in 1840 as part of their efforts to secure what was then known as Indian Territory for white settlement. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States and offered Lincoln's Plan for Reconstruction which called for African Americans to be brought back into slavery within five years or face expulsion from America altogether. The plan met with strong opposition from many whites who felt that freeing slaves would break up America into racially separate spheres of influence where black people would rule over whites whileolarswould rule over Muslims and other nonwhite people. In 1865 Union General John Sherman ordered all northern states except Missouri not to allow any more African American soldiers into their states until they had been registered with local governments as free citizens – this order led to violence throughout southern Illinois when Confederate soldiers attempted to cross state lines into Missouri without being registered. In 1872 Overland Park was organized as a town under territorial jurisdiction through an act of Congress following Lincoln's promise that every county in Kansas would be represented at government meetings if it did not secede from America during Reconstruction.
