The townsite rapidly grew due to agriculture and manufacturing interests attracted by nearby natural resources such as coal and oil which would later become central to the city's growth story: oil well drilling opened up in earnest within radius around 1900 followed by further development during World War I with the acquisition and production by Shell Oil Company of what would eventually become Wichita State University; automobile production kicked off shortly thereafter with Ford starting operations at a plant eastward from downtown on Main Street; these events helped spur growth even further with many new businesses opening up along subsequent streets including Third Street which today still bears his name – becoming perhaps symbolically synonymous with modern day Olathe’s rapid progress story given how many major developments took place along this stretch over time!
