It was here that Captive William Graves met Captive George Armstrong and soon after formed an important connection between Indian traders and white settlers in this locality; for it was whileCaptive Graves was incarcerated at Old Grit that Captain Caldwell made his famous purchase of four horses from one chief named Black Hawk for $2 10s., which event created great excitement throughout central Kansas." In 1870, George Schieffer built a log cabin on Emporia Hill overlooking Olathe Creek. This became a popular local stopping place for travelers because it had views of both the creek and downtownOlathe skyline below The first post office in Olathe was established on December 3, 1871 by Colonel James Purdy with the name "New Albany". On February 14th 1907 New Albany changed its name to "Olathe" following approval by voters during a special election held to select a new post office site within Township limits pursuant to section 6 of Act No 2556 entitled "An act authorizing changes in local government authorities within certain townships", approved November 16th 1906 (2556-1). On April 12th 1917 residents voted to change their city charter to become an open-air market town under provisions included therein authorizing such township action when approved by referendum conducted pursuant to section 15(a) ofAct No 4559 entitled “An act providing for organization and management of open air markets” (4559-1). The charter amendment failed but amended legislation passed subsequent years enabling development as olathane into an official community did occur!
