Olathe, Kansas (population: 507) is a city in west-central Kansas. It is the county seat of Barton County. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Olathe is located on the Saline River and it has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. The river provides drinking water for Olathe and much of Barton County. The history of Olathe can be traced back to 1854 when three men named Alexander Baird, Wm Hays and James Kellar decided to make a new town in what was then part of Lawrence County. They named their new town "Olathe" after one of their business partners, John Aulds (1803-72). In 1867, Olathe became an incorporated city under the laws of Kansas. When Lawrence seceded from Kansas in 1861, Olathe remained as the county seat until 1870 when it was moved to Wichita. In 1907 Kansans founded the first oil well in Barton County when they drilled a well near current day Stone Road and Osage Avenue. This well was abandoned due to high costs associated with maintaining it and re-flowing the salty soil around it every few years; however, this early oil drilling helped spur development in nearby towns such as Wintersville and Topeka which soon developed into major metropolitan areas during the 1920s and 1930s boom times known as "The Great American Oil Boom". During World War II many industries closed down or were relocated out of state due to wartime rationing; however, Olathe's heavy concentration on agriculture kept its economy strong through those tough times. In recent decades there have been several waves of immigrants arriving from Mexico City and other parts of Latin America; these newcomers have brought their own cultures with them which has added another layer of diversity to Olathe's social fabric. The first European to visit what is now Olathe was a French Catholic missionary, Father Jacques Marquette in 1804. He named the place "Kiowa" after his native village in France. The first post office was established at Kiowa on November 15, 1868. In 1907, Olathe became a city when it was annexed by Wichita. At that time it had a population of 2,564 people. In 1963 it reverted back to a town when Wichita annexed all of Sedgwick County except for an eastern corner which became Hutchinson. On January 1, 2007 Hutchinson merged with Olathe to form one city with a combined population of over 1 million people Olathe residents often contribute their unique perspectives and stories to local newspapers and other publications throughout the Midwest; they are also known for their Hog Heaven Festival (a food competition) and Fourth of July fireworks displays which bring much excitement to Main Street in downtown Olathe every year during summertime
