That range served as a training ground for local militia and also served as home to the first NRA meeting in 1906. The current facility replaced an older building that had been used as a schoolhouse. The Olathe Rifle Range has been open continuously since 1902 and today offers more than 1,500 acres of shooting opportunities including five ranges (three indoor/outdoor) and 50 miles of trails.
Olathe, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. Olathe is part of the Wichita– Overland Park, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by George Wacquant and his brothers Jacob and Andrew Wacquant. The first post office in Olathe was established in 1870. The town name comes from "Olathe," a small village in present-day England that George Wacquant had been to as a child. The townsite was laid out on December 5, 1868 by Edward Haggerty and James Nolen with assistance from George Stephenson and others who contributed $5 for the purchase of land from John Smedley (the founder of Wichita). On February 16, 1870, it became known as Olathe after General Averill Harriman donated $100 to establish an Academy there at Mount Pleasant School House. In 1875, Buffalo Bill Cody made his first visit to Olathe when he toured the Shawnee Indian Agency with Indian Chief Black Hawk near Fort Hays. That year also saw the opening of Olathe's first store—owned by Nathan Bedford Forrest—and its first schoolhouse; both were built on what is now First Street between Main and Elm Streets. In 1881, William Fenton organized a group of farmers which purchased 10 acres (40 hectares) south of town for $10 per acre ($2 million today). This area became known as "Fenton Field". In 1886–87 residents raised money for a new high school which opened east of downtown on Main Street in 1890 under the name "Kansas State Normal School". A fire destroyed most of this building but students were able to move into new classrooms inside while reconstruction began soon afterwards. In 1902 Oklahoma Spring oil well burst and created an oilfield around what are now Maplewood and Garden Roads within walking distance of downtown Olathe; this resulted in many businesses being closed down due to tanning saloons using open fires during prohibition era days that lasted until 1933 when state law changed prohibiting such activities without a permit from any business owners or management other than those mentioned above specifically exempted . Businesses reopened quickly once Oil production stopped but some operations did not reopen because they could not find another buyer for their property or because they decided against continuing operation due to health concerns associated with exposure to oil spills . Many local merchants all thought Prohibition would eventually end so they did not have much impact on local economy outside Of liquor sales/open fires However some actually got rich off their investments like GE manhattan dealership across Elm street From Harding Avenue westward
