Olathe is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 23,451 at the 2010 census. Olathe is home to the University of Kansas and Lawrence Technological University. It is also the site of historic battles between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The first European settler in what is now Olathe was George Armstrong Custer who came from Nebraska in 1859. He platted the town of Olathe on May 12, 1861, when he and his then-wife SacaliaArmstrong Custer founded their farm there. On November 15, 1861, a group of Union soldiers led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant attacked and burned down a small Confederate settlement east of present-day Olathe while residents were away for dinner. This event became known as "the Battle of Osage Ford." In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel John Denny founded Camp David after being ordered to move his command's supplies eastward across Kansas due to Indian hostilities beyond Fort Hays Bridge into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Captain James Hargrave commanded Denny's troop at Camp David which later became known as "Hargrave's Hill". On March 3rd 1865 General Order No 1 superseded all other orders concerning military operations within Wichita County on account of political unrest over Reconstruction efforts underway in that county; this order specifically directed Captain Hargrave to bring arms and ammunition to Camp David without delay should any demonstrations or disruptions occur thereupon. Kansas City attorney Lorenzo Thomas soon moved to Olathe after completing law school at KU in 1866; he would become one of its most prominent attorneysowning one of KU's first firms – Thomas & Harger – until his death in 1935 aged 102 years old. A large portion of Central Avenue near Interstate 45/I-270 used to be called "Lorenzo Thomas Drive" following his death until it was renamed "Central Avenue" following an Act by the KS Legislature on November 2nd 1984 (). In 1903 Mayor Charles Bemis unveiled a statue honoring him located at 35th Street and Newell avenues N., just west side Of Wabash Avenue South near Interstate 40/US 50 exit lanes heading east towards downtown Wichita Falls The statue has been relocated several times but still stands today (see photo below) . As time passed more people started moving into Olathe from surrounding communities such as Lenexa and Shawnee because agriculture was becoming increasingly unprofitable due to changed weather patterns brought about bySoil moisture changes caused by Harvey Milk's win as Mayorof San Francisco during that time period along with other environmental problems throughout much America growth rates slowed or stopped altogether making it difficult for new businesses etc...olath

Olathe is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 4,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Johnson County after Topeka. Olathe was founded on July 20, 1868, by Luther Pomeroy and others as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. The name Olathe originated from an early captain of the cavalry unit known as "The Cheyennes." The first store in Olathe opened in 1871. A post office was established here on August 1, 1872. Olathe became a town on April 16, 1907. On February 15, 1909, the first school building in Olathe opened; it was used until 1957 when it was replaced by the present structure. In 1911–12 the Olathe Waterworks constructed two large reservoirs – one near downtown and one east of town – to provide water for local farms and homes. In 1916–17 a new high school complex (now called Parkland High School) was built east of town on what is now First Street between Olive and Maple Streets; this facility served both local students and suburban students who did not have access to public schools south of Topeka. In 1923–24 Wichita State University moved into its current location adjacent to Parkland High School; this campus furnished all undergraduate courses with physics and engineering laboratories (the only such facilities at Wichita State). In 1954–55 K-State added mathematics and science courses to its operations center adjacent to Parkland High School; this addition led to K-State's move from Topeka into full university status under that name five years later. In 1956ipheral Kansas Pacific Railroad extended passenger service through Olathe; service stopped permanently in 1980 following abandonment of tracks north of town along US Highway 6A (Kansas Avenue) due to fire risk caused by heavy machinery operation near these tracks.. Today there are no regular train services within or outside Olathe so visitors must take bus routes connecting other cities in Johnson County or topeka for transportation inside/outside of Olsonthal
