Olathe, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 471 at the 2010 census. Olathe is home to the K-State University campus and the Olathe Arts District. The first settlers in what is now Olathe were farmers who arrived in 1847. They named their community "New Salem" after Connecticut's new capital city of Hartford. A post office was established at Olathe in 1849, and the community began to grow rapidly. In 1857, a railroad was built through Olathe, which led to even more growth and development. The Community School District was organized in 1870 and became one of the largest school districts in Kansas. The area around today's Olathe had been inhabited by Native Americans for many years before European exploration started occurring on this portion of the continent. By 1800, traders from Missouri had started trading with Indian villages along the Arkansas River near Wichita Falls; however, no permanent settlements were made until 1825 when General James Wilkinson founded New Madrid Mission about 25 miles south of present day Wichita Falls on high ground known as Blue Hill Plateau (modern day Mayflower Hills). Upon his arrival he found that several groups of Creek Indians were living among their own people east of Wichita Falls and he decided to establish a mission station there rather than continue trading with them because he wanted to convert these pagan natives into Christianity or else force them converts back onto their reservation land where they would be safe from white settlers! After his visit to Wichita Falls he ordered construction of Fort New Madrid which functioned as a military post between Wichita Falls and Stuttgart (present day Wichita) for six months each year during Mexican claims over Texas! In 1828 General Wilkinson again discovered an area rich in oil shale near present day Topeka but decided not to pursue this discovery because it would require building an infrastructure such as roads and reservoirs outside San Miguel de Allende (present-day Mexico City). Although some early pioneers did settle near present-day Topeka, most activity took place farther north where oil shale could be found less accessible due to geographical factors including flat terrain and hostile Sioux/ Cheyenne tribesman who inhabitated much higher elevations nearby. However within 10 years after arriving at Topeka Gabriel Hennepin had developed some 350 acres northwest of downtown on White Cloud Road; within 5 years him & others had drilled 7 wells totaling 11 feet diameter all without any fatalities! This initial success led Drilling Company owner Jonas Salk Sr., son Jonas Salk Jr., brother Edward Jorgenson III & uncle John Pillsbury Sr.(the father of vaccine founder John Fenton Pillsbury)to start developing what would become known as Parkland Ranch which included much of what is now northeast Topeka just north of current day FirstEnergy Stadiums limits! Oil production from shale formations increased significantly during World War II thanks largely to efforts by US President Franklin D Roosevelt whose National Recovery Act created vast new industries such as aircraft manufacturers Boeing Co(now Lockheed Martin), Ford Motor Co., Bethlehem Steel Corp., Chocolate Corporation etc.). With war industry production increasing came unprecedented demand for labor resulting in mass unemployment throughout much Midwest although average weekly wages remained relatively low due primarily to American preference for skilled workers over unskilled ones. Life expectancy also improved noticeably following World War II with median life spans ranging from 78 years old when completed education ended up being desired (), 83 years old when professional medical services became available (), 82years old when social security began being offered ().
