Olathe, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 961 at the 2010 census. Olathe is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit of the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settlers in what is now Olathe were Germans who arrived in 1854. A post office was established in 1855, and by 1860, there were 50 residents. The land that would become Olathe was purchased from the Sioux Indian Tribe by an agreement between the United States government and John Smeaton in 1865. Smeaton had recently come to Kansas as part of the Bentonville Land Grant Programme and he wanted to homestead some land near Wichita for his family. He named the area "Olathe" after General Custer's cavalry unit which he had seen fighting at Little Bighorn on July 25th,1876. In 1877, Jens Jensen started a lumberyard just east of present-day Olathe with two sawmills and one jute mill. By 1889, there were 10 mills operating in Sedgwick County with a total production of over $100 million worth of lumber products! In 1898, Olathe became home to its own school system when it merged with other Sedgwick County schools into Wichita Public Schools District No. 1 (WPSD #1). In 1907-1908 WPA Works Projects Administration funded a series of projects called Prairie Village which included improving public transportation within Olathe; creating a new waterworks facility; adding parks and playgrounds; and developing industrial areas adjacent to downtown Olathe for manufacturing jobs outside of Wichita City Limits! During World War II (1939-1945),Olathian businesses produced munitions including lead ammunition for USAAF planes involved in strategic bombing raids over Japan; rubber Tire production for military vehicles used on Okinawa; aircraft parts such as wings/flaps/tailplanes etc.; electrical power generation from oil wells across centralKansas; asphalt pavement making process that took place at Belt Line Plant until 1985
The town of Olathe, Kansas was founded in 1867 by David W. Haigh and his wife, Esther. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer who died in battle during the Indian Wars. The Haighs were from a family of farmers who had been living in east central Missouri since 1824. They first moved to what is now Olathe when they married in 1867. The Haighs started a small grocery store and post office before starting their own farm in 1870. In 1886, they built a large brick schoolhouse which served as the community's first public school. In 1893, the Haighs donated land to build the city limits of Olathe which included much of downtown and much of today's north side of Olathe Boulevard
