The early years were difficult for Olathe – it faced discrimination from neighboring towns due to its location close to Wichita – but through hard work and determination, the town slowly began to thrive under leadership including those who would eventually lead Olathe into success: Mayor J H Bemis Sr., Mayor John Fritsch (who later served as Governor),and banker W P Moody Jr.. In 1886, local businessmen donated land surrounding olatha so that it could be used as a shopping district; this new development helped to spur further development in Olathian culture and economy which continued until present day. During his time as President of the United States (1889-1901), Andrew Johnson visited Olathe multiple times while on campaign trail across central Kansas; his visit marked significant progress forOlathe given its struggling situation at that time.
