The first post office was established in 1855, and by 1860, Olathe had a population of about 150 people. In 1865, an act was passed which allowed white men over 26 years old to own land within Kansas without having to go through a jury trial. This new law created much excitement among local farmers, who saw an opportunity to sell their land at low prices to new settlers. However, when this law came into effect, only 6 out of every 10 settler requests were granted because there were so few able-bodied men available to take on such an undertaking.
