Olathe, Kansas is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 21,719 at the 2010 census. Olathe is the third-largest city in Johnson County and the largest city east of Wichita. It is also home to Olathe High School and Olathe Municipal Airport. The first white settlers in what is now Olathe arrived in 1854 from Illinois. They named their new community after General David Ewing's hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. Many people who lived near Olathe early on left for various reasons: there was no water available to them, the land wasn't fertile enough for farming, or there were too many Indians living nearby (the Battle of Plum Creek was fought just outside of town). However, by 1860 most of the farmers in Johnson County had moved to present-day Olathe because of better soil and climate here than elsewhere around the county seat of Topeka. By 1870 more than 60% ofOlathians were farmers while only 10% were urban dwellers. In 1881 an act was passed by Congress providing that all Indian lands east of Kansas City be open to settlement without compensation from the tribes involved (the tribe that owned these lands today was then called the Shawnee Nation). As a result, more people moved into western Johnson County as well as eastern Topeka due to this offer; some even settled down near present-day Wichita Falls (then spelled Wichitas Falls) because they thought it would be easier to get along with th

Olathe is a small town in Kansas that was founded in 1854.
