In the 1870s, Newton was one of the most prosperous towns in Kansas. The residents were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops. However, by the turn of the century, things had changed. The town was destroyed by a fire that started in a barn. The town's only weapon were two old blacksmiths' hammers which they used to crack open cans of gasoline to use as light sources. In 1892, a company named Winchester bought the rights to produce firearms in Newton. That year, they began producing flashlights using an existing design from their guns. The first flashlight produced by Winchester was called the “Pistol-grip” flashlight. It had a metal grip with an attached light bulb and worked on three different circuits: up/down/left/right (commonly known as “the three lions’ heads”). These early flashlights were very popular and became known as "weapon lights." However, because these devices required strong batteries for long periods of time (typically around 12 hours), people soon realized that they weren't ideal for use at night or during wartime. As a result, Winchester switched to using nickel-cadmium batteries which would last much longer at night or during wartime circumstances. In 1827, the community of Newton grew to include a few miles of land east of the current city limits. The name North Newton was given to the town because it was located on what is now U.S. Highway 191. In 1861, a post office was established in North Newton and it continued to serve until 1907 when it moved to Wichita. At that time, Wichita became the new capital of Kansas and Newton ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality. When Wichita became an independent city in 1907, many people decided to move away from north Newton because of its lack of infrastructure and services including a school system that didn't open until 1925. However, many residents returned to north Newton over time because they found its small size more manageable than Wichita's larger size and better education opportunities for their children. By 1994, North Newton had regained some former population centers which has led to renewed interest in the town since then.
