Newton, Kansas is a small town in the Kiowa County seat of Newton. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. The community began as a small farming village on the banks of the Arkansas River. By 1872, it had grown to include a blacksmith shop and a store. In 1907, local farmers formed the Newton Agricultural & Manufacturing cooperative to raise prices on goods sold in other villages. The co-operative soon became one of the largest and most successful agricultural cooperatives in Kansas. In 1925, the Newton Agricultural & Manufacturing Cooperative went bankrupt because it could not compete with large commercial concentrate producers. Many villagers lost their jobs because of this decision. In 1972, Newton residents voted to merger with neighboring Wichita Falls to form Wichita Falls-Newton Township (renamed Newton-Wichita Falls in 2002). The merger allowed for more shopping opportunities and growth for businesses in what had been an agriculture village until then. The merged community enjoyed strong economic success through its years as an agricultural township; however, when Interstate 44 was constructed in 2004-2005, it destroyed much of what had made Newton such a thriving community: many farms were abandoned or converted into housing developments while others failed to meet new development standards set by I-44 developers due to less available land than they expected. As a result of these problems and other declines during that time period, revenue from taxes generated by these businesses dwindled over time and closed down several businesses altogether within two decades after merging with Wichita Falls annexed by Newton Township - causing significant financial hardship for many residents who depended upon those businesses for surviving basics like food and shelter
