Newton, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, located about 25 miles east of Wichita and about 15 miles north of Topeka. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Newton is home to Parsons University and its research facilities as well as many other local businesses and organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, which helps support local schools. Newton was founded in 1854 by John Newton and his family after they left Nauvoo, Illinois following a religious revival there that year. John's father had been an early settler in what became Newton County. The Newtons were one of several families who arrived in what is now Wichita on May 20, 1854 with five others from Delaware Township (now Pawnee City),Kansas Territory under the leadership of Capt Richard Wagoner and Moses Woodruff. They named their new settlement for Sir Isaac Newton who had first proposed calculus to English scientists during a trip to America some years earlier. For three months they labored near present-day Hutchinson before moving out into open country where they built a cabin and started farming two acres per day from land grant they received from President James Kansa on July 6, 1854. The town grew rapidly during its early days based largely on agricultural production: wheat, corn, oats, sorghum, potatoes etc.. On November 3rd 1850 residents voted to unify Newton with neighboring Topeka through incorporation proceedings which were successful thanks largely to contributions from members of the community's Masonic lodge No 2 (the "first"Masonic Lodge west of the Alleghenies). In 1860 when Kansas Territory was divided between Missouri and Texas based on congressional apportionment it folowed nearby Girard City into Topeka proper while Newton remained within Wichita county boundaries; however this changed upon KS admission to the Union in 1861 due to Nebraska annexation that year One important factor leading up to towns growth was access to water resources: numerous wells had been dug by then farmers not only for irrigation but also for manufacturing needs such as wagonwheels or shoeshine stands; these were supplemented by hydropower developments beginning around 1900 In 1902-1903 an agreement was made between Wichita Electric Light Company (Welch brothers)and Phelps Dodge Coal Mines company for construction/operation of line extending out through Newton onto Phelps Dodge property adjoining Panhandle Creek; this line became known as "The Great Western Railway".
