In 1881, Newton residents John R. Haggerty and his wife Emmalee voted to incorporation as a town. The first mayor was Wm. S. Porter, who served until 1886 when he became justice of the peace. The population of Newton rapidly grew in the years that followed, with many new homes being built in what is now the north side of town and along Cherry Creek. In 1903, Newton had a school and post office; in 1912, it had an industrial area with a flour mill, sawmill, carpenter shop, blacksmith shop and two churches. during World War I Newton soldiers volunteered for service overseas but were not given equipment or training enough to fight effectively so they turned their guns over to the enemy instead. This caused much hassle for the town because the citizens felt they had been betrayed by their military leaders After World War I ended many people left Newton for better opportunities in other parts of Kansas but some stayed to keep alive memories of their old hometown and continue living there today
Newton is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 969 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton is named for George Washington Newton, an early settler and namesake of Wichita. Newton was founded in 1857 by John Ladd and his family as a station on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1865, A.J. Bigham opened a stagecoach stop there which became known as "Bigham's Station". In 1868, Isaac Smith built a store and post office in Newton. The first school was built in 1870 by Pemberton & Wigglesworth; it operated until 1880 when it was replaced by a gristmill that still stands today. In 1874, Jens Christiansen opened a general store here which became one of the largest in the area. It continued to be Operated until 1955 when it closed due to economic problems and zoning changes made by Wichita city officials concerned about possible development near its edge on what then were open prairies with limited access to transportation facilities for residents living within easy walking or driving distance of most businesses since these areas had been developed primarily for cattle ranching and other agricultural purposes rather than residential development without commercial values or services available nearby

The town continued to grow during the 20th century, but started to decline in popularity in the 1970s due to various factors including dwindling economic opportunities and increasing competition from other towns in its vicinity. In 2000, Newton merged with another nearby town, Topeka, and became part of the city of Topeka. However, despite this merger, Newton retains its original identity as a small-town Kansas community that is well-known for its agricultural production and history.
