Newton experienced significant growth during World War II when it became home to two United States Air Force installations: RAF Newton-on-the- Arkansas (later renamed McGuire AFB) and KBF New Mexico (later known as Tinker AFB). In 1945, Newton also became home to Wichita State University after approval by the legislature of Kansas City to establish a new university there following Wichita's annexation by that city in 1912. After years of effort by local officials, Wichita State University opened its first building on campus in 1951. During the early 21st century, Newton enjoyed continued success as asmalltown with strong community spirit and vibrant businesses which have helped support registered voter turnout at nearly 60 percent since 2000 alone; highest rates in any American small town or rural municipality according to US Census data released this year." Today, only a few remnants of old downtown remain as testament to Newton's past glory: A plaque marking where Moffatt Street meets Sixth Street marks one such remnant; while another former business on Seventh Street is still used as an office park today.
