Newton was a small town in Kansas until the mid-20th century. The town was named after John Newton, an early settler and surveyor in the area. Newton was founded in 1854 by settlers from Illinois, and quickly became a thriving community. In the early 20th century, Newton had a population of around 100 people. However, during the Great Depression, the town lost its businesses and residents. However, over time, Newton regained its former prominence as a small townsfolkhub. Today, Newton is a ghost town with few remaining residents except for a few scattered homes and businesses. Newton’s history began with John Newtons arrival in 1854. He was one of six black men who arrived to ranchlands that would become Springfield Township in what is now Wichita County. Newtons land grant allowed him to purchase 640 acres of land east of present-day Wichita Falls on the banks of the Arkansas River. This property served as Newtons home for many years before he sold it in 1865 to James Millingham Jr., another black settler in Springfield Township. Millingham built his home on part of this property which he named Newton Manor after his father-in-law, Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727). In 1874, while living at Newton Manor, Mary Lincoln made history when she became first lady of America following her husband Abraham Lincoln’s election as president that year. Many people traveled to Springfield to see Mrs. Lincoln during her first term as First Lady; however, only two young women were admitted into her private quarters: Mrs.[Margaret] Sanger and Miss[Helen] Douglas Maxwell (later Mrs.[Hattie]), both from Massachusetts! In 1898—more than 15 years after Mrs.[Lincoln]’s death—a group of white women organized under the name “Miss America [First Lady],[1898]-1901” which toured America visiting various states annually since their establishment in 1896! They met withMrs.[Lincoln]'s widow numerous times but never met her daughter! Newton experienced several economic setbacks during World War II due to shortages caused by wartime rationing policies instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt’s administration ().
