Newton, Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,595 at the 2010 census. Newton was established in 1881 when the railroad arrived and named after Sir Isaac Newton. It is one of six towns in Douglas County. Newton was platted on April 12, 1881 by J. Laughlin and A. Bockman. The first settler in Newton was Wm Hennigan who bought land from Pemberton & Co., a railway company that had built the line between Topeka and Wichita. settlers soon arrived to build homes and businesses around the new railroad depot which served as their cultural center for knitting balls and playing checkers with friends from nearby towns such as Atchison, Topeka, or Gearyville. The railroads reached Newton in 1887 when they extended east from Shawnee to Topeka via the Santa Fe Railway's Byram Branch north of Newton on what is now State Highway 362 (SH 362). This opened up opportunities for farming and ranching along the track where people could buy goods transported north by train then deliver them to their homes or businesses across town by wagon train or horseback ride. In 1893, US Post Office officials decided that Newton should be renamed "Newton" after Drs John Caird (1767-1855) and Richard Newbold (1797-1876), both pioneers working on an Indian trade road connecting eastern Wichita with western Nebraska through Council Bluffs County; this name change applied only to post office buildings within town limits not to other facilities within the community such as schools or churches which continued under their original names until they were Modeshiteized in 1978. The first school building also began construction that year but it never got completed because of money problems caused by high freight rates charged by Union Pacific Railroad subsidiaries during those years for shipping goods overland from eastern Canada through Dodge City onto US Interstate 80 which ran through Shawneepi
