Newton, Kansas is a small town in York County, Kansas, United States. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. Newton is located in the Wichita metropolitan area. Newton is one of three towns in York County that are still considered "ghost towns". According to the 2010 census, Newton has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km2), all of it land. Newton was founded by General James Pemberton on September 15, 1854 as a post office and cattle station called Hennepin Station. The name changed to Newton on November 1, 1855. On February 20, 1861, Newton became part of Lawrence County when it was organized from parts of York and Overland Counties. A new courthouse was built in Newton in 1865 and named for John Wesley Clarke, an early settler who had helped organize Lawrence County into a county government under the leadership of Isaac Stevens. In 1871–72 the community lost its status as a ghost town when most of its settlers moved away to Liberty or Topeka because they were afraid their homes would be confiscated if they stayed put. In 1907–08 some residents decided to start a school near their farmstead which they called "The Prairie School." It served grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade until 1972 when curriculum changes led to its closure; however it reopened as an after-school program for high school students beginning in 2009 with modifications made so that it meets current State Standards On October 16th, 1906 two thousand dollars was raised by citizens of Newton for the purchase of land west of US Highway 36 at what is now Indianola Road NE; this project became known as "The Western Expansion" because it increased rural Presence east of US Highway 36 by 100%. This event marked not only victory for those who had championed this cause but also serves as an important reminder that openmindedness ultimately leads to success once funding becomes available On July 11th 1978 two hundred fifty five people attended “A Pioneer Celebration” picnic held at Old Stone Fort Municipal Cemetery north side where over seventy acres off today’s corner street were donated including thirty nine acres south side next door concrete wall foundation with driveway & interior brick walls will also be brought down
