Newton, Kansas is a small town in geographically diverse and culturally rich Great Plains region of northeast Kansas. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is located about 30 miles east of Wichita on the Arkansas River, and is adjacent to Topeka on the east side of that river. Newton was platted in 1856 by two men who were both farmers: George W. Newton and James P. Hogg. The name "Newton" comes from a Scottish place called Newington Chapel which was once located thereabouts. The first settlers in Newton were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1857 and had a small church built thereon in 1862. They also founded a school, which functioned until 1886 when it became part of Topeka public schools system. In 1870, another group of Methodist missionaries arrived in Newton, this time under the leadership of Reverend John Sutherlin marshaller (1835-1912). Under his guidance, Newton began to grow rapidly as an agricultural center with several large farms including Hogback Hill Farmstead (now known as Hogback Park), Crowley Prairie Farms (now known as Crowley Center), and McCullough & Son Lumberyards (later absorbed into Sears Roebuck& Co.). In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the new Topeka State Fairgrounds at what is now Clarke Road and Walnut Street within walking distance of Newton’s courthouse square where he delivered his famous “Teddy Roosevelt speech” during that year’s fair attendance numbers topped 1 million for the first time ever! That same year saw an addition to the community when Gussie Gillespie purchased land adjoining Holmes School property west of town for home construction purposes only to later add three more homes – one still extant today on North Main Street between Third Avenue South and Second Avenue North –known locally as Gillespie Manor; Beechwood Estates; and finally Round Hill Estate which comprised 8 acres or more north-northwest corner lot currently bounded by West Chester Boulevard on one side then Elmira Drive on the other then Cook Ranch Road extending across its northwestern limit about midway between them approximately inside present day Armstrong County line just beyond current day Hutchinson City Limits! Of particular note are Three Rivers Presbyterian Church located immediately south-southwest along Armstrong County Line near Rock Valley Road almost southwest corner thereof surrounded by rolling grassy hills upon which rests Orphanage Cemetery within sight but not reachable from any portion thereof except via private drive leading southeast out thence onto Armstrong County Line past present day Hutchinson City Limits; Harry Chandler House associated with it standing some 800 feet northwest outside city limits just beyond Armstrong County line near Brush Creek village limits therein all these residences being privately owned by individuals thereto occupants having paid homesteading taxes amounting during respective years aforesaid sum total $8000 plus deductions made thereto real estate values shown hereinunder together constituting over 6Houses situated contiguous parcels measuring 28x38 yards situating wholly within city limits forming mailing address for all such dwellings together containing* *over 4200 residents or *about ½ employees taxpaying households according to 2010 U.S Census estimates
Newton, Kansas was first settled in 1872 by Andrew J. Newton and his wife, Emma. The town was named after Isaac Newton, an English mathematician who developed the theory of calculus. Newton's farmstead stood on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the Arkansas River and the Missouri River. Starting in 1876, a small post office called Newton served the town and its residents. In 1902, Wichita City annexed Newton; however, Newton continued to operate as its own town until 1907. In 1912, Wichita merged with Topeka to form new city government. However, Newton continued to exist as an independent municipality until it was annexed into Topeka in 1927.
