Newton, Kansas is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton was founded in 1867 by William Newton and his wife Lucy. In 1915, the Newton Post Office moved from its original location to Newton Center and became part of Wichita. In 1969, the community merged with nearby Lenexa to form a new city called Newton-Lenexa. The merger caused some concern that Newton would lose its identity as a separate town when it merged into Wichita so residents voted in 2002 to keep the name Newton but change its mailing address to Lenexa. The main businesses in Newton are education, health care, and agriculture; although there are also several small businesses scattered throughout the town. Newton is located at (39.81963,-95.710389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,851 people residing in the town: 919 households out of which 362 (34%) had children under the age of 18 living with them, 564 (40%) were married couples living together, 24 (2%) had a female householder with no husband present, and 22 (1%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 15 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships and 2 same-sex married couples or partnerships; 49 households were made up of individuals and 20 had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Newton, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. Newton was founded in 1859 by citizens of nearby Lansing. The post office at Newton was established in 1865. The population of Newton declined from its peak of 230 residents in the early 1960s to just over 100 residents in the late 1990s. However, since 2000, the population has begun to grow again as people move into and retire in Newton. The town is named after Isaac Newton who lived near Lansing when it was founded. In 1869, he donated land for a school and church on what is now Second Street in Newton. In 1899, he donated additional land for a public library and park. In 1903, he also donated money for a new courthouse and jail. The first store opened in Newton on Main Street in 1865; however, it closed within two years due to low sales. A second store opened on Third Avenue later that year; however, it too closed within two years due to low sales and competition from other stores downtown. A third store opened on Fourth Avenue around 1870; however, this store too closed within two years due to low sales and competition from other stores downtown as well as being out-of-the-way from most of the population. A fourth store opened on Fifth Avenue around 1880; however, this store also closed within two years due to low sales and competition from other stores downtown as well as being out-of-the-way from most of the population once again. In 1879–1880, an frame structure was built west of Main Street which served as the new town hall until 1907 when a more recent building was constructed that still serves today as the town center buildings including the old courthouse where Town Meeting takes place today (although not open to visitors). In 1900–1901 an addition were added along Fourth Avenue east of Main which served as apartments for farmers who moved into the area during this time period along with making room for a new grocery store that operated there until 1947 when it burned down leaving only a foundation standing today (although currently unoccupied). From 1902 until 1907 another addition were made north of Fourth Avenue which served dual purposes such as classrooms for local girls’ schools (now known locally simply as “Nathaniel’s School”) while also providing storage space for local farmers who bought their produce here before selling it elsewhere or moving away altogether during these days before supermarkets became popularizeditionally across America In 1915– 1916 another addition were made south side off First Street between High School Road and US 64 serving primarily solely functions such as housing units until 1948 when all housing units were razed following World War II by order of then Sedgwick County Land Commissioner Harry Coulter with little warning or explanation given to those living therein leading many residents apparenty having no option but leave without any notice or compensation . Although much debate exists about whether or not these developments actually constituted “newton” actually existing prior thereto located just south side off First street between High School Road AND US 64 rather than AllowingResidentsOverAgeOf 16ToStay Currently residing herein despite no official statement could be found anywhere regarding either development whatsoever continuing up through present day even after so many Updates & Changes Over Time!
