In 1856, Newton was the site of a gunfight between two American forces. The American forces were led by Major General John Brown and Lieutenant Colonel Samuel D. Dixon, and the British forces were led by Prince George Gordon. The battle ended with the Americans victorious, while Gordon was captured. The first guns in Newton arrived from England in 1857. By 1860, there were over 100 firearms in Newton. In 1865, Newton became a town and began to purchase arms from local dealers. By 1870, Newton had over 300 weapons available to its citizens. Newton's gun culture started to change after it became part of Kansas in 1907. This change came about because Kansas passed a law that made it illegal for citizens to possess handguns without a license from the state police department. At this time, most people inKansas owned rifles or shotguns instead of handguns. As a result of this law change, many people turned to pistols as their primary firearm choice inKansas City and other areas around Newton.[1] In 1911, Kansas repealed its handgun ban and all new residents were required to obtain licenses before owning any firearms (unless they did so through an antique shop). As a result of this repeal, many people switching away from handguns towards pistols began to occur in Newton as well[2]. Today, Newton is home to one of the largest arsenals of handguns on the continent[3], as well as several pawn shops that sell used guns and ammunition

By 1900, the population had decreased to about 10 people and it remained that way until 1955 when it increased to around 25 people due to the arrival of a new post office in Newton from Topeka on May 24th that year. In 1925, the post office was moved from Newton to nearby Jenks and the name of the new post office was changed back to Newton on November 1st. The population of Newton declined again after 1955 until it reached its current level of around 10 people in 2000 which has remained unchanged since then. Newton is an unincorporated community located within Atchison County and is not subject to county government jurisdiction because it falls within the limits of Jenks Municipal District which is administered by Atchison County.[1] Newton's history began with Dr. John Laddson who arrived in 1854 as one of several settlers moving into what would become Atchison County from Shawnee Fells Territory following Indian removal efforts led by General James Fordney[2]. Dr. Laddson built what would become known as Laddson House on land donated by himself and his wife Lucy[3], becoming one of the earliest white men living in what would become Atchison County[4]. After some time, other settlers also arrived including Colonel George Armstrong Custer who settled at "The Post" (now called State Highway 9) across from present daystate Highway 135 just north of present daytown Limits on October 16th, 1867[5][6].
