The town quickly became a popular stop on the Santa Fe Trail because of its fertile land and easy access to nearby water supplies. In 1870, the first post office opened in Newton with three employees. By 1881, there were twelve offices throughout the county and nine hundred citizens living in the town. In 1893, Newton emerged as a prosperous small farming community with six stores, two churches (the First Baptist Church and Union Presbyterian), one school (Pioneer School), four barns/stockyards/water tanks/a garage/a privy addition, a well (later converted into an ice cream parlor), two residences and four outbuildings used for agricultural purposes: three corn cribs and one haystack barn/. Although it had only five residents at its peak, by 1925 Newton had become a thriving center of trade with several businesses catering to local farmers as well as travelers stopping on their way to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
