Newton, Kansas is a small town in Harper County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. Newton is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Newton was founded in 1854 by John Newton and named for his father-in-law, Dr. James K. Newton. The first school was built in 1855 and taught by Mrs. Lillie Ewing and Mr. Aiden Hays. In 1860, a log cabin was erected on the site of today's Union Pacific Depot to serve as a schoolhouse. A second school was built in 1865 and taught by Revs Jno Paine and Wm Hennepin; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt with frame construction and renamed Newton High School in 1867 after President Andrew Johnson's son-in-law, James K., Jr.. In 1872, Isaac Asbury started farming on land that now includes much of what is present-day Newton Township; he moved there from Overland Park (now Harvey) due to poor soil conditions thereabouts. In 1876–77 three schools were opened: one for white children only (Asbury Academy), one for black children only (Blakely School), and one for both races (Newton Institute). In 1893 an addition to the high school building was made with additions including an auditorium/theater, gymnasium/ Dance Hall, kitchenette/garage/dining hall/laundry room, shop on first floor which functioned as a post office until 1978 when it closed down because of lack of mail service; also on this level were two classrooms used as daycare facilities until 1985 when they became home visits for local families with young children up to 8 years old during the morning hours before their parents had their workdays off; currently these rooms are used as storage for extra equipment needed during summer days when no classes are offered at high school.
