He decided to start his own business makingbinoculars in Newton. The first few years of Hoskins' business were very successful and he soon began production of more than 100 types ofbinoculars. In 1849, Reverend John Hargrave started production of his own type ofbinocular called the "Hargrave." This binocular was designed specifically for use by farmers and other land-owners who needed an easy way to see things at a distance while on their farmstead or ranch. Hargrave's company quickly became very successful and continued production until 1865 when he sold his business to Charles Aspinwall. Aspinwall continued production until 1898 when he merged with another company producing identical binoculars under two different nameplates (the Aspinwall & Underwood Company). In 1916, The American Optical Company merged with Allied Tube Corporation creating The American Optical Corporation which still produces binocular products today.

Newton is a town in Hays County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. Newton is named after Isaac Newton, an English scientist and mathematician who developed calculus and first proposed the theory of gravity. In 1872, Newton moved to Newtonville, KS and continued to reside there until his death in 1924. Newton was established as a post office in 1881 by order of President James K. Polk. The community was platted on July 20, 1880 by Wm. Tappan within the buffalo country east of Wichita Falls, Texas Territory (now Wichita County), with a population of thirty-six residents. A school was organized in 1885 and operated for two years under the name "Pioneer School". The present-day school building was built in 1903–04 and is located on Main Street across from the old courthouse square which still bears its original name (the courthouse burned down in 1907). The town has been changed several times since its incorporation; it most recently changed its name to Newtonville in 1922 when it relocated northward from its original site along Buffalo Creek near what is now Westover Hills Shopping Center. When Newtonville became too small for development or when more people moved into neighboring towns such as Overland Park or Independence they reverted back to their original names; however, due to a recent change in Missouri law making all towns incorporated into single municipalities regardless of their previous names they have since reverted back once again to their former names: Newton (newtown), Buffalo Creek (bluetooth creek), Overland Park (overlander park), Independence (independence), and Westover Hills (westover hills). However, overall density remains low since most residents commute into Topeka or Wichita Falls on older roads that are easier to navigate than today’s highways.
