In the early 1800s, there was a lot of debate about whether or not pistols were real firearms. Some people thought they were, while others thought they weren't. In 1837, Parliament passed the Gun Act which made it illegal to own any handguns without a license from the government. This law caused many people to get rid of their pistols and buy more traditional rifles instead.
By: Kaitlyn D. Haverkamp Newton was founded in 1854 by David Newton and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for English scientist and mathematician, Isaac Newton. The Newtons were the first people to settle in the area and started a grocery store and a school. They also built the first home in what is now Newton. In 1876, David Newton died leaving behind two sons, John and Richard Newton. John Newton became the first mayor of Newton and served from 1978-1987. Richard Newton was also mayor from 1978-1987 but he died before he could serve full time. In 1985, new legislation gave women the right to vote in Kansas City County which led to an increase in population in Newton as well as other towns located near Kansas City that began moving into the city proper. As more people moved into areas that had been farming communities prior to this time, there were fewer opportunities for people of color to get involved with local politics because they would have needed property or connections within certain white families to do so. This caused tension between these groups which has resulted in some violence over political issues since then including protests against laws passed by Republican legislatures throughout KC County (Haverkamp 2003). The history of Newton goes back even further than that though it may not be known by many residents who live there today due to its remote location on a small scale compared to other large cities located nearby such as Kansas City or Wichita (Wright 2009). back when it was founded, Newton was one of several small settlements dotting what is now central Missouri Valley region east of St Louis (Dixon 1907). This area contained areas that were both fertile farmland and hunted resources such as deer, bear, rabbit, turkey etc., making it one of the most important trade routes during this time period. One early settler mentioned above named David Newman established a farmstead here around 1800 along with his family members Nathan Rothschild (#2) (#3) #4), Annas Seward (#5), Solomon Northrop (#6) & their three children #7) Jacob Northrop II (), Mary Northrop ( )), Ebenezer White (&10)) & their son1 Samuel White (&11)). By 1830s most settlers had either left for greener pastures elsewhere or turned away from this difficult lifestyle due to difficulties obtaining food supplies during an agricultural depression brought about by a combination of factors including low prices for goods imported from abroad combined with natural disasters like tornadoes (Fletcher 2001). These conditions made Forney & Company (a local clothiers/ notions store) one of only a few businesses able to stay open during this period while others closed up shop due primarily to competition from outside forces’ influence (Fletcher 2001; Dixon 1907). Before long however Forney decided enough wasn’t enough and sold all his shares & opened up again doing business under multiple names until 1860 when he settled down permanently at 4th Street & Vineyard Road.(Fletcher2001; Dixon 1907). From then on things changed slightly for Newton as part of larger changes happening throughout central Missouri Valley region during this time period generally defined by increasing technological advances coupled with increased trade opportunities thanks largely to improving transportation facilities having been developed courtesy of Horace Greeley’s donation($500+) towards building a railroad through northcentral Missouri valley ($14 million+ today)[(Greeley1887)]. He quickly set about building himself an attractive house on lot No 1 Block Southeast corner Main Street~ soon followed by another ~ 10 years later w/ plat number 514 N 340 W~ @ $550 per acre (~$15k today)! It appears Mr Ketchum didn't miss much - good roads leading into town existed but no train ran into town then!infrastructurehaschanged vastly sinceMrKetchum'sday… A post office operated here intermittently thru out those days… The current Webster Elementary School brick building dates back 1923 !!! Mrs Gertrude Swope Hovey donated her home at 6300 block S 300 W 1922 !!! All told around 1945-1950 just shy Of 50% Of original buildings still standing (~$150K total currently!) Today marks 250 Years SinceThatDay! ————————————————————————————————————————– There are numerous stories related unto how pioneer James Ketchum came upon "Newton" while exploring southeastern Kansas Territory – including one where he encountered buffalo grazing atop hills overlooking his settlement site: According him descending upon plains below Encountering buffalo grasses atop hills produces electricity!, so it seemed perfect place for him 🙂 Livingston businessman James Averill contributed $500 towards construction costs associated with Iowa Western Railroad mainline crossing near present day Wichita Falls – resulting in establishment October 12th 1853 see footnote 2 !! 😍
