A fire destroyed most of the town in 1886; however, new buildings were erected quickly and Newton became a thriving community again. In 1912, Arthur Sperry donated land to found East Central High School which served as the original campus for Newton-East Central High School until it moved to its current location in 1955. In 1999, Newsweek named "The Best Places To Live In America" and Newton came within one vote of being included among the top ten communities nationwide that best exemplify "the spirit of American innovation." According to Forbes magazine's 2003 list of America's fastest growing suburbs (published before Newtown's shootings), Newton ranked #2 behind only Arlington Heights, Illinois on account of continued growth since 2000 alone! According to a report by Forbes magazine dated March 2003 titled "America's Fastest Growingsuburbs", "Newton has seen explosive growth over recent years due to strong economic development around transportation infrastructure such as Interstate 435 and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard." According to this same report: "Among those who live here [in Newtown], there’s no question that creativity flourishes...[it]’s home base for two major technology companies: Northeastern Energy Solutions (NES) – maker of power plants used worldwide by utilities including Comcast [XDSL], Time Warner Cable [TWC] – and Lockheed Martin Land Systems Co., which manufactures attack helicopters."
