It was named for Samuel Merriam, an early settler. The first school in Merriam was built in 1871. A post office was established in 1872 and the name of the town changed to Merriam in 1893 after Samuel Merriam's death. The first railroad reachedmerria in 1870. The first store and post office were both located on Main Street; however, only the store continued operation until it burned down in 1903. In that year, the merger of two other towns churches led to the new name of "Churchtown". When merged with Atchison County for incorporation as a city in 1907 it reverted back to its original name ofMerria Township before finally changing it again toMerria on December 1st of that year following enactment by state legislators of an act entitled "An act providing for changes relating thereto" . The present day municipality boundaries were set by legislative action which included annexing all or part of several other townships while leaving merria unincorporated within their limits; merria incorporated as a village on July 1st, 1955 merge annexation with Hays City on November 6th 1959 finally setting forth final municipal boundaries
