Captain Stephenson had been sent by the United States government to explore new land in what is now Shawnee County. When he arrived in 1854, he found some empty land that he thought would be a good place to build a farmstead. He named the land Merriam after himself and his wife Sarah Merrill. In 1865, Captain Stephenson's son John married Lilla Hodge of Topeka. LillaHodge was the daughter of Colonel Elijah Hodge of Topeka and Mrs Anna Maddox of Topeka. After their marriage, the Hodes moved from their home at Spring Creek to live near where they now live on County Road A1A (today's Main Street). They started a small farming operation which continued until 1889 when they sold out their interest in it to August Espeault who renamed it Merrillville after himself and his father-in-law James Fenton (the founder of Fort Riley). In 1910, Samuel Merrill died at age 93 years old without leaving any children behind him. His death created a financial crisis for his widow Sarah as she needed money to support her three daughters alone while her husband was dead. She turned to prostitution which helped pay off her debt but didn't solve her daughters' lack of income since they couldn't keep up with growing expenses such as food for themselves and for their father's funeral services ($5 per head).
