Merriam, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by settlers from Illinois, and named after Samuel Prentice Merriam, an early settler in what is now Wichita County. After years of growing up around Wyandotte Creek (now known as Arkansas), Merriam Joined the United States Military during World War I and served in France and Belgium before returning to America in 1919.
