Merriam, Kansas, is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Kansas. It is bordered by Hutchinson to the east, Dodge City to the north, and Illinois to the west. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Merriam was named for Alexander Merriman, a settler in that area in 1854. In 1881, a post office called Merriam was established on land donated by Samuel Sibley; it remained in operation until 1907. The first settlers arrived here from Massachusetts in 1858 and founded what is now known as "The Village." They were led by Captain John Whitefield and his wife Esther Wistar Whitefield. The first store opened here on October 15th of that year under license from Secretary of War Simon Cameron. By 1860 there were twenty-five people living here and seven stores had been built; all but one closed within ten years. In 1861 construction began on what would become Dixon County Courthouse which was completed two years later; it served as county seat until 1903 when Wichita took over that function. One of Dixon's first mayors was James Boulware who served from 1865-1868; he also built present day Park Hall which still stands today as a courthouse annexe serving as an administrative building for county government since 1907. Today Monument Hill Cemetery contains most of Dixon’s early burials including Captain John Whitefield (1799-1871), Sarah Goodspeed (1809-1875) and George Armstrong Cuthbert (1800-1864). During World War I local men helped with munitions production at nearby Lawrence Manufacturing Company plant; many residents also volunteered their services during hostilities including Mrs.(Lulu) Beal who worked at Lawrence from 1915 to 1917 Producing souvenirs for soldiers has become an annual event held in her honor at Merriam High School where she graduated in 1918 A post office called Latham opened on October 1st 1870 with six mailbags per week service available but closed within two weeks due to lack of customers As Kansas Territory grew more populous it became necessary to establish larger postal districts so on March 30th 1880 territorial postmaster general Augustus Hocking divided Edwards County into three districts based upon population: central district containing Topeka & Blue Springs areas along Arkansas River while south district included Shawnee & Gardner Counties along Missouri River On April 6th 1880 Central District Post Office opened at Topeka with twelve mailbags per week service available but this offered only limited access due to distance from other posts

Merriam was founded in 1847 by John A. Merriam and his wife, Margaret Graham. The area now known as Merriam was part of the Shawnee Reservation when it was established in 1827. In 1848, the United States acquired the reservation and renamed it Kansas. The town of Merriam began to emerge from the ashes of the Great Shawnee War (1846-1848) and quickly became an important center for trade and commerce in Kansas. In 1892, Kansas repealed its statehood statute and became a federal district under the jurisdiction of Washington, D.C.. On September 15, 1907, Kansas Statehood occurred with a vote by residents of both districts over a period of three days. As a result of this event, Merriam became one of the first towns in America to be statutorily incorporated as an organized municipality. The current courthouse is located on Main Street in downtown Merriam. It was built between 1915 and 1917 by architects Weems & Root with funds provided by local philanthropist Augustus Fisk. The building is made up of two stories with an attic that can accommodate 100 judicial officers or their families. One story also contains six adult classrooms; a gymnasium; four small shops on each floor; and four postage stamps sized rooms used as offices for municipal government officials including city attorneys, clerks, stenographers etc., among others During World War II, many jobs were created in defense industries such as aluminum Casting Works #2 at nearby Topeka while other businesses closed due to wartime rationing measures which impacted agriculture especially food production
